AVOID SUNBURNS
The use of sunscreen with SPF is a huge factor in protecting yourself from harmful UV rays generated by the sun.
It is important to remember that not all sunscreens are created equally. Be sure that you are using sunscreen with a full-spectrum of UVA/UVB protection. Protect contains Titanium Dioxide - A reflective sunscreen that protects against both types of harmful sunrays - UVA and UVB. Protect has a reflective sunscreen that is not absorbed by the skin.
Be sure that you protect your skin when enjoying the sun by using Protect liberally and often. And remember that sunscreen should be applied often (every 2-3 hours). Now is the perfect time to purchase Protect. Just log onto www.nuvante.com and sign in to your account to place your order. And don't forget to keep your skin moisturized with Hydrate.

ALARMING INGREDIENTS
in skin care products
Ruthie Harper, M.D., developed and launched NuVANTE, a new line of health and wellness products that would address the concerns of people that want to not only look good, but those that are also concerned with achieving and maintaining optimal health. You can use NuVANTE products with confidence, but how about other products on the market? Are they safe?
Read what Dr. Harper has to say about the ingredients that skin care companies may be using in their products.

COSMECEUTICALS
Not so long ago, healthy, youthful appearing skin was thought to be a reflection of good genetics. Serious skin care conditions were left for dermatologists to manage, and cosmetic surgeons were responsible for creating a more youthful appearance. Cosmetics were used to cover the surface of the skin and improve color or tone. The first contributions to quality skincare regimens came along as cosmetic manufacturers created products designed to clean, tone, moisturize, and protect the skin from the sun. However, very little attention was paid to how these products, either positively or negatively, affected the health of the skin.
The past few years have marked an explosion in science and technology that has allowed skin care to affect the skin’s condition and appearance in ways previously thought impossible. A burgeoning category of products called "cosmeceuticals" has hit the scene. In large part, this is related to the recognition that the skin is a unique organ that is affected by what we do to it from the outside as well as the inside of the body. This has high-lighted the need to not only protect the skin from outside environmental factors such as sun and wind, but has also resulted in the growth of a new category of skincare products created to protect and rejuvenate the skin.
In the past, there has been a clear distinction between a cosmetic, whose purpose is to beautify the skin, and a pharmaceutical or drug whose purpose is to treat a medical condition or disease. This distinction ended with the development of cosmeceuticals, cosmetics that are able to create real and visible changes in the way the skin looks, feels, and performs.

OUCH, IT HURTS!
How do I treat a sunburn?
Just because you don't see the effects of overexposure to the sun yet, don't think you have lucked out. Sunburns can take up to 24 hours before you see the damage.
Often, and unfortunately, until you feel the pain of a sunburn you don't begin thinking seriously about the importance of using sunscreen and reapplying it every few hours when you are spending the day in the sun. When you realize your error, you dread the appearance of the sunburn that could have been easily avoided by using Protect sunscreen.
The wisest choice is to use sunscreen to prevent sun damage. However, if you find you were remiss in preventive action and have developed a sunburn, there are several types of burns and burn treatments. The two most common types of sunburn are first-degree burns and second-degree burns.
First-degree sunburns cause redness and will heal, possibly with some peeling, within 3-6 days. They can be painful or uncomfortable and are best treated with cool baths and a good moisturizer like Hydrate, or over-the-counter hydrocortisone creams. Avoid the use of "-caine" products (such as benzocaine), which may cause sensitivity to a broad range of unwanted chemicals. In addition, Aspirin, acetaminophen or ibuprofen may relieve the discomfort somewhat.
Identifying A First-degree Burn:
- Involves epidermis only
- Local pain and patchy inflammation of the skin
- No blisters
- Heals spontaneously without scarring
Second-degree sunburns blister and can be very dangerous. If blisters appear, accompanied by a headache, chills, and fever, see your health professional immediately for treatment. You will want to avoid the sun while your skin recovers from the damage and then thereafter you must be safety conscious if you choose to spend time in the sun. Drinking plenty of water helps replace the fluids you have lost. Some second-degree burns will heal within two weeks, while other deeper burns will require professional medical attention. Most studies have found an association between sunburn and enhanced risk for melanoma, a type of skin cancer, particularly if you suffered severe childhood or adolescent sunburn since there is more time for melanoma to develop over your lifetime.
Identifying A Second-degree Burn:
- Involves epidermis and dermis
- Moist appearance
- Blister formation
